Colombo, June 25 – Sri Lanka is preparing to roll out Starlink satellite internet services to local consumers following a one-week inspection period, according to Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) Director General Bandula Herath.
TRCSL initially issued licenses for Starlink in July 2024 and approved five main tariff packages by December 2024. Since then, multiple discussions have been held with Starlink Services, LLC to finalize a framework addressing technological security and taxation data collection. All preliminary arrangements are now in place.
A total of 112 Starlink equipment units have been imported, with 12 scheduled to be distributed to selected consumers by the end of this week. Upon distribution, the service will be activated and jointly supervised by TRCSL and the Ministry of Defence to monitor technical security compliance and service quality.
At the conclusion of the one-week trial period, TRCSL will evaluate the outcomes and proceed with broader implementation of Starlink services in Sri Lanka based on the review.
