Sri Lanka aims to increase its digital economy’s contribution to GDP from 3-5 percent to 15 percent over the next five years, focusing heavily on artificial intelligence (AI) as a core growth driver. Dr. Hans Wijayasuriya, Chief Advisor to the President on Digital Economy, outlined this ambitious “AI-first” approach, emphasizing the development of a national AI policy and the recent formation of an advisory committee on AI to guide strategy, regulation, and citizen protections.
Speaking at the launch of the UN Human Development Index (HDI) Report 2025 in Colombo, Dr. Wijayasuriya highlighted that Sri Lanka’s digital economy strategy aims not only to accelerate economic growth but also to enhance inclusion, capability, national competitiveness, and social indices such as the HDI.
He underscored the transformative potential of AI when implemented responsibly, alongside governance frameworks that prioritize inclusion and trust. The strategy integrates AI across government and private sector infrastructures, supported by initiatives like the unique digital identity platform, national data exchange, and sector-specific AI tools for healthcare, education, and agriculture.
Dr. Wijayasuriya emphasized inclusion as a foundational principle, aiming for meaningful participation and equitable benefits beyond mere digital access. He also stressed Sri Lanka’s strong position, citing low inequality and a high HDI as advantages in implementing robust AI governance and safe, trusted digital ecosystems.
