Intelsat Partners with Forest Whitaker’s WPDI to Provide High-Speed Internet to Learning Centres in South Sudan and Uganda

Satellite operator Intelsat has teamed up with actor Forest Whitaker’s non-profit, Whitaker Peace & Development Initiative (WPDI), to deliver high-speed internet connectivity for the first time to WPDI’s Community Learning Centres in South Sudan and Uganda. The partnership will equip ten centres—seven in South Sudan and three in Uganda—with satellite-powered internet access.

Over a three-year period, Intelsat will supply equipment, managed connectivity services, installation, and ongoing technical support, enabling reliable internet where traditional infrastructure is insufficient. This connectivity will allow WPDI to expand educational offerings, including access to digital resources, online courses, and virtual exchange programmes, helping students develop digital literacy alongside training in conflict resolution, entrepreneurship, and community development.

Internet penetration in least developed countries like South Sudan and Uganda remains low, with only about 19% of the population online, and even lower in conflict-affected areas, creating barriers to education and opportunity. By improving digital access, Intelsat and WPDI aim to empower trainees to become community leaders and advocates for positive change.

WPDI focuses on promoting peace, resilience, and sustainable development in regions impacted by violence, poverty, and environmental challenges.
