For years, blockchain technology in Egypt faced significant barriers—not just technical, but also economic and legal—largely due to restricted access to cryptocurrencies. Now, a transformative shift is underway with the launch of ICP Hub Egypt, powered by the Internet Computer Protocol (ICP). This initiative enables developers to pay for decentralized compute and storage services directly on-chain using Egyptian pounds (EGP), eliminating the need for cryptocurrency transactions.
To celebrate this milestone, ICP Hub Egypt is inviting Egyptian developers to participate in the World Computer Hacker League 2025 (WCHL25), a global four-month hackathon hosted by the DFINITY Foundation and the ICP Hubs Network. Unlike traditional short hackathons, WCHL25 offers extended development time and real-world support to create production-ready decentralized applications. The competition progresses from national rounds in Egypt to regional African contests, culminating in a global final where teams pitch to investors for a share of over $300,000 in prizes and funding opportunities.
ICP stands apart as the only blockchain enabling AI to run on-chain with full privacy and the first protocol allowing nations to establish sovereign internet infrastructure without dependence on foreign cloud providers. Developers on ICP can deploy full-stack applications, run tamper-proof smart contracts and AI models, and pay fees in EGP without needing crypto wallets—all while ensuring robust privacy and cybersecurity.
ICP Hub Egypt is led by Mercatura Forum, Egypt’s premier Web3 venture studio that supports blockchain startups through incubation, funding, mentorship, and policy engagement. The initiative aims to make Egypt a hub for blockchain innovation and digital sovereignty, empowering developers to build globally competitive products while fostering national digital independence.
This launch marks a new chapter for Egypt’s Web3 ecosystem, offering local developers unprecedented access to global-grade decentralized infrastructure in their own currency and the chance to pioneer a sovereign internet.
