Starlink Launches High-Speed Satellite Internet Service in Sri Lanka

Elon Musk confirmed via social media that Starlink’s high-speed, low-latency satellite internet service is now officially available in Sri Lanka. This announcement marks the country’s entry into a growing list of South Asian nations benefiting from Starlink’s global satellite network.

The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) granted Starlink Lanka (Private) Limited a “Telecommunications Service Provider” license on August 14, 2024, authorizing nationwide satellite internet services. Starlink’s internet offers significantly faster speeds than existing fibre-optic connections in Sri Lanka and extends access to remote and underserved regions lacking traditional infrastructure.

With Sri Lanka becoming the third South Asian country to gain Starlink access—after Bhutan and Bangladesh—the company is also advancing towards launching services in India. Starlink operates the world’s largest satellite constellation, with over 6,750 satellites currently in orbit, providing reliable, low-latency internet globally.

The service caters to diverse needs through residential plans, including Residential Lite for lighter users and full Residential plans for heavier internet consumption.

Starlink’s growing presence in Asia includes countries like Mongolia, Japan, the Philippines, Malaysia, Indonesia, Jordan, Yemen, and Azerbaijan, serving customers in over 100 countries worldwide.
