Telecom Egypt, in partnership with subsea supplier SubCom, has successfully completed two landings for the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6 (SEA-ME-WE-6) subsea cable system on Egypt’s Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts. The cable now has landing points in Port Said on the Mediterranean coast and Ras Ghareb on the Red Sea.
Telecom Egypt has established diverse and resilient terrestrial crossing routes linking the two landing stations, enabling a robust connection between the Red Sea and Mediterranean segments through two unique trans-Egypt terrestrial routes.
Mohamed Nasr, Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt, highlighted the importance of the Eurasia route between Southeast Asia and Europe, calling it a critical telecoms traffic corridor. He emphasized the continuous development of new routes to connect Singapore and Egypt, enhancing marine path diversity and increasing capacity.
The SEA-ME-WE-6 cable spans approximately 21,700 kilometers from Tuas, Singapore, to Marseille, France, with 17 landing points across Bahrain, Bangladesh, Djibouti, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and the UAE. It boasts a total design capacity of 126 Tbps (12.6 Tbps per fibre pair).
The project is backed by key players including Telecom Egypt, Bharti Airtel, China United Network Communications Group, Microsoft, Mobily, Orange, PCCW Global, Singtel, Telekom Malaysia, and others. Batelco manages landing points in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE, along with additional fiber pairs on the trunk between Bahrain and Oman.
SEA-ME-WE-6 is expected to be ready for commercial service in the first quarter of 2026.
