Telecom Egypt and SubCom Complete Dual Landings for SEA-ME-WE-6 Subsea Cable on Egypt’s Coasts

Telecom Egypt and subsea supplier SubCom have successfully completed two landings for the Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6 (SEA-ME-WE-6) subsea cable system on Egypt’s Mediterranean and Red Sea coasts. The cable now features landing points in Port Said on the Mediterranean coast and Ras Ghareb on the Red Sea.

Telecom Egypt has established diverse and resilient terrestrial crossing routes linking these two landing stations, enabling connectivity between the cable’s Red Sea and Mediterranean segments via two unique trans-Egypt terrestrial routes.

Mohamed Nasr, Managing Director and CEO of Telecom Egypt, emphasized the importance of the Eurasia route between Southeast Asia and Europe, describing it as a critical telecom traffic corridor. He noted ongoing efforts to develop new routes connecting Singapore and Egypt, enhancing marine path diversity and expanding capacity.

The SEA-ME-WE-6 cable spans 21,700 kilometers from Tuas, Singapore, to Marseille, France, with 17 landing points in countries including Bahrain, Bangladesh, Djibouti, India, Indonesia, Maldives, Malaysia, Oman, Pakistan, Qatar, Sri Lanka, and the UAE. The cable has a total design capacity of 126 Tbps (12.6 Tbps per fibre pair).

Backers of the project include Telecom Egypt, Beyon, Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC, Bharti Airtel, China United Network Communications Group, Dhiraagu, Djibouti Telecom, Microsoft, Mobily, Orange, PCCW Global, Singtel, Sri Lanka Telecom, Telekom Malaysia, Telin, and Trans World Associates.

Batelco owns the landing points in Bahrain, Oman, Qatar, and the UAE, as well as additional fiber pairs on the trunk between Bahrain and Oman.

SEA-ME-WE-6 is scheduled to be ready for commercial service in the first quarter of 2026.
