Telecom Egypt, in partnership with global submarine cable provider SubCom, announced the successful landing of the SEA-ME-WE-6 (Southeast Asia-Middle East-Western Europe 6) submarine fiber optic cable system at Port Said and Ras Ghareb. This high-capacity, low-latency data corridor will connect Singapore to France through 17 landing points, including a strategic land crossing in Egypt, linking the Red Sea and Mediterranean segments via complementary land routes.
Mohamed Nasr, Managing Director of Telecom Egypt, hailed the landings as a significant milestone in expanding Egypt’s international connectivity and strengthening its submarine infrastructure. Telecom Egypt joins 15 other telecommunications companies in the SEA-ME-WE-6 consortium, including Microsoft, Bharti Airtel, China Unicom, Orange, Singtel, and Djibouti Telecom.
The cable system is set to address the rising global demand for international bandwidth, growing annually by 30-40%, supporting digital transformation and economic development in emerging markets. Egypt’s strategic location as a global internet traffic corridor is further reinforced by hosting approximately fifteen submarine cables, with seven more links planned by 2027.
The SEA-ME-WE-6 cable is scheduled for commissioning in 2026, with landings in other countries expected over the coming months.
