MTN Group Advances Responsible AI to Drive Africa’s Technological Future

MTN Group has launched an ambitious initiative to harness responsible Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the aim of transforming Africa’s technological landscape. The company’s AI strategy is built on three core principles aligned with global best practices: a robust governance framework ensuring ethical, effective, and safe AI adoption; an agile, scalable operating model for measured AI deployment; and focused use cases delivering tangible business value.

To guide AI development and use, MTN has implemented a world-class Responsible AI Policy and formed a dedicated sub-committee within its Executive Committee to oversee governance, execution, and impact management related to AI.

Recognizing that data quality, talent, strategic partnerships, and infrastructure are vital to success, MTN has established an operating model supported by an in-house AI Centre of Excellence (CoE) and a Cloud CoE. These units coordinate AI activities across the Group, backed by a Software Solutions team of over 300 engineers.

Mazen Mroué, MTN Group’s Digital Infrastructure CEO and GCTIO, emphasized that AI has evolved from a mere enabler to the engine reshaping business, innovation, and competitiveness globally. He highlighted AI’s role in augmenting human potential and embedding itself seamlessly into daily life, fundamentally changing how people live and work.
