Bahrain has significantly boosted its digital infrastructure by landing the 2Africa Pearls submarine cable system near the Seef District on June 4. This milestone, backed by a US$205 million investment, places Bahrain at the heart of a 45,000-kilometer global digital superhighway, multiplying its connectivity capacity tenfold.
The cable landing ceremony was attended by Dr. Shaikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Khalifa, Minister of Transportation and Telecommunications, and Khalid Al Osaimi, CEO of stc Bahrain. The rapid ground connection process highlights the strength of Bahrain’s public-private partnerships, particularly with stc Bahrain, as a catalyst for advancing national goals.
Dr. Shaikh Abdullah underscored the project’s importance to Bahrain’s Economic Vision 2030, describing it as a qualitative leap that enhances global connectivity and digital economy ambitions. Khalid Al Osaimi emphasized that the new system supports the Kingdom’s economic diversification and reinforces its leadership in the ICT sector.
The 2Africa Pearls cable offers a massive 180 terabits per second capacity, making it the only submarine cable in the GCC equipped to handle rising demand from cloud computing, online gaming, and content streaming. Its low latency and high bandwidth will accelerate technologies like 5G, AI, and IoT, ensuring reliable internet for both consumers and businesses.
This landmark development positions Bahrain as a critical node in the global data exchange network, cementing its role as a regional digital hub.
