Liberia’s Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications has initiated a collaborative project with the ECOWAS Commission for Infrastructure, Energy, and Digitalization and the World Bank to deploy a second subsea cable linking Liberia with four other West African nations: Gambia, Guinea-Bissau, Guinea, and Sierra Leone.
Announced last week in a ministry press release, the “Second Submarine Cable Project” aims to bolster essential connectivity for the five countries, each currently relying on a single international subsea connection via the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) cable. The new cable will establish critical redundancy, improving regional network reliability.
The ECOWAS Commission’s Project Preparation and Development Unit (PPDU) engaged telecom consultancy TACTIS to perform a comprehensive feasibility study, which was completed recently.
The project promises to significantly enhance the digital infrastructure across the region, providing millions of citizens with more reliable and resilient internet access.
