In a landmark achievement for Sri Lanka’s tech industry, OREL IT has become the first organisation in the country to receive the TIA-942-C Design Certification for its data centre facility in Nawinna, Maharagama. This certification confirms the facility meets Tier III standards, ranking it among the world’s most reliable data infrastructures.
This milestone underscores Sri Lanka’s capability to compete globally through homegrown expertise and innovation. OREL IT has been a pioneer in the local data centre sector since 2014, when it became the first Sri Lankan enterprise to deploy Modular Data Centres—a bold move that has proven visionary, with some centres running flawlessly for over a decade.
Last year, OREL IT launched Sri Lanka’s largest cloud infrastructure, becoming the first non-telecom company to offer cloud services domestically. It also developed the nation’s only sovereign private cloud, built to National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) guidelines, ensuring local data remains within Sri Lankan borders to meet regulatory compliance and bolster national digital resilience.
OREL IT’s primary infrastructure operates at Orion Stellar—the country’s only TIA-certified commercial data centre—and maintains disaster recovery backups at a Uptime Institute Tier III-certified facility, complemented by multiple geo-redundant locations. With the addition of its own TIA-942-C certified facility, OREL IT offers clients enhanced flexibility, security, and full local control.
