Egypt Launches First Dedicated Automotive Terminal at Suez Canal

Egypt marked a significant milestone on July 1, 2025, with the inauguration of the Suez Canal Automotive Terminal (SCAT) in Port Said, the country’s first specialized port infrastructure for finished vehicles. Backed by a global consortium comprising Africa Global Logistics (AGL), Nippon Yusen Kaisha (NYK), and Toyota Tsusho Corporation, SCAT is designed to handle growing automotive trade in North Africa and the Eastern Mediterranean.

Situated at the northern entrance of the Suez Canal, SCAT can accommodate two large car carriers simultaneously and currently offers storage for 2,550 vehicles across 21.2 hectares, with plans to expand capacity to 10,000 vehicles. The terminal is technologically equipped to manage imports, exports, and transshipment, supporting Egypt’s ambition to become a regional logistics hub.

With a 30-year operating agreement, the joint venture aims to handle up to 50,000 vehicles annually, bringing specialized logistics capabilities that align with the broader development of the Suez Canal economic zone. Olivier De Noray, CEO of Ports & Terminals at AGL, described the launch as pivotal for regional automotive market growth and local economic support.

Leveraging AGL’s continental logistics experience, NYK’s car carrier expertise, and Toyota Tsusho’s automotive sector knowledge, SCAT represents a shift toward a strategic and integrated automotive logistics node within Egypt’s global trade network.
