Kathmandu: Minister for Communications and Information Technology, Prithvi Subba Gurung, emphasized that simply having Nepal Telecom (NTC) reach all districts on paper is insufficient. He urged immediate efforts to bring 4G connectivity to every household and accelerate 5G network expansion.
Speaking during a budget discussion for the 2025/26 fiscal year with NTC and Nepal Telecommunications Authority (NTA), Minister Gurung stressed that delays in telecom expansion would hamper the government’s digital framework goals and challenge the maintenance of digital good governance.
He highlighted the need to reduce network disruptions on highways and prioritize expanding services in high-demand public areas. Recognizing the importance of connectivity for tourism, he called for effective network enhancement in tourist destinations.
The minister also noted the low visibility of Nepal Telecom’s promotional efforts and encouraged increasing public awareness about NTC’s services, especially in education and health sectors.
Communications Secretary Radhika Aryal instructed NTA to develop an action plan supporting young innovators in the IT sector, emphasizing the state’s role in fostering innovation aligned with contemporary needs.
NTA Chair Bhupendra Bhandari reported that 5G operations are nearing completion, with the bidding process imminent. Meanwhile, NTC Acting Managing Director Sabina Maskey confirmed ongoing 4G expansion and preparations for 5G launch.
