Nepal’s smartphone import market saw a significant 24% growth in fiscal year (FY) 2081/82, with imports valued at NPR 35.54 billion, according to the Department of Customs. A total of 2,184,694 smartphone units were brought into the country during this period, generating government revenue of NPR 6.63 billion.
This marks a strong recovery following the slowdown caused by the COVID-19 pandemic when consumers held onto devices longer. By comparison, FY 2080/81 saw smartphone imports worth NPR 28.67 billion with 1,839,035 units imported, yielding NPR 5.34 billion in government revenue.
The growing import figures reflect renewed demand, with expectations of further growth during the Dashain Tihar holiday season, traditionally a peak sales period. Nepal’s price-sensitive market continues to favor budget smartphones, although premium flagship devices are gaining traction.
With the market showing positive momentum, FY 2082/83 is anticipated to bring further growth and opportunities for Nepal’s smartphone industry.
