Algerie Telecom and Sparkle Sign MoU to Develop New Italy-Algeria Subsea Cable

Algerian operator Algerie Telecom and Italian international service provider Sparkle have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to develop a new subsea cable connecting Italy and Algeria. The agreement also includes plans to offer value-added services such as cybersecurity, cloud computing, data center technical support, and training across key technical domains. A dedicated European point of presence for Algerie Telecom is also part of the collaboration.

The subsea cable is expected to deliver a high-capacity, ultra-low latency, and fully redundant route to Europe, improving upon existing infrastructure. The MoU was announced at the sixth Italy-Algeria Business Forum in Rome, attended by Italy’s Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni and Algeria’s President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Adel Bentoumi, CEO of Algerie Telecom, stated that the project is critical for diversifying international connectivity and meeting Algeria’s growing customer demands.

This project follows Sparkle’s recent involvement in a consortium with Zain Omantel International, PCCW Global, and Telecom Egypt to develop the Asia-Africa-Europe-2 subsea cable system.
