Telecom Egypt, the country’s integrated telecom operator and subsea cables provider, together with global subsea systems supplier SubCom, announced the successful completion of two critical landings of the Southeast Asia–Middle East–Western Europe 6 (SEA-ME-WE-6) subsea cable system in Egypt. The cable has come ashore at Port Said on the Mediterranean coast and Ras Ghareb on the Red Sea.
Telecom Egypt facilitated the terrestrial connection between these coastal landing points by establishing diverse and resilient crossing routes, thereby completing the cable’s landing activities within Egyptian territory.
SEA-ME-WE-6, the sixth iteration in the SEA-ME-WE cable family, links Singapore (Tuas) to France (Marseille) through Egypt’s terrestrial corridor. SubCom served as the main contractor responsible for building the subsea system.
Once fully deployed, SEA-ME-WE-6 will connect Africa, Asia, and Europe across 17 landing points, significantly bolstering global network infrastructure. The 21,700 km system is operated by a consortium of 16 major subsea cable providers, including Telecom Egypt, Microsoft (USA), Bharti Airtel (India), Orange (France), Singtel (Singapore), and others across the Middle East, Asia, and Africa.
Mohamed Nasr, Telecom Egypt’s CEO, said, “These landings mark a key milestone in expanding Telecom Egypt’s global reach and subsea infrastructure. Our terrestrial routes uniquely link the Red Sea and Mediterranean segments, enhancing network diversity and capacity. This project reflects our commitment to supporting digital ambitions regionally and globally with robust and future-ready subsea connectivity.”
David Coughlan, President and CEO of SubCom, added, “We congratulate Telecom Egypt and consortium partners on these important landings. SubCom’s expertise in engineering, manufacturing, and installation has been critical to making SEA-ME-WE-6 a reality, and we look forward to upcoming project milestones.”
