Nokia to Power Medusa Submarine Cable Project Linking Europe and North Africa

Nokia has been awarded the contract to supply technology for the Medusa submarine cable project, a major digital infrastructure initiative announced from Marrakech. The Finnish telecom giant will deploy its 1830 GX platform and ICE7 coherent optics, enabling ultra-high-speed data transmission of tens of terabits per second per fiber pair with low latency and energy efficiency.

Spanning 8,700 kilometers, the Medusa cable will connect the Atlantic coast, Mediterranean Sea, and Red Sea, establishing a high-speed digital corridor across the region. With 24 fiber pairs, each capable of 20 terabits per second, the system will deliver a total capacity of 480 terabits per second.

The €342 million project, partially funded by the European Union, will link European countries including Cyprus, Greece, France, Portugal, Italy, and Spain with North African nations such as Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, and Egypt.

This strategic digital bridge aims to close the connectivity gap between Europe and North Africa, enhancing internet speed and reliability for millions while supporting emerging technologies like 5G and AI across the Mediterranean.
