Following the entry of American tech giant Starlink, several Chinese companies have expressed interest in launching satellite internet services in Pakistan. In response, the government has fast-tracked efforts to finalize the regulatory framework needed to facilitate these operations.
The Pakistan Space Activity Regulatory Board (PSARB) recently submitted a detailed consultant report to key authorities, including the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA). The report outlines proposed rules, licensing conditions, and regulations for satellite-based internet service providers.
PTA is currently reviewing the draft regulations and consultant recommendations. After completing its review, PTA will submit formal feedback to PSARB to aid in finalizing and publishing the regulatory framework.
Multiple government agencies have been consulted to ensure comprehensive guidelines, with officials emphasizing a cautious, well-planned approach to licensing that considers technical challenges before approvals are granted.
Notably, the framework under consideration may include provisions for direct satellite-to-mobile phone connectivity, which could greatly enhance access in remote and underserved areas.
PSARB aims to finalize the rules within a month, after which the registration process for satellite internet providers, including the interested Chinese companies, is expected to commence.
