Bangladesh Submarine Cables PLC (BSCPLC), a state-owned and publicly listed company, has reached a major milestone by delivering 4 terabits per second (Tbps) of real-time international internet bandwidth as of August 1, 2025. This follows BSCPLC’s recent addition of 200 Gbps bandwidth to support Starlink’s new commercial satellite internet service in Bangladesh launched in July.
Earlier in April 2025, BSCPLC crossed the 3 Tbps mark, meaning it added 1 Tbps of capacity within just three months—a significant acceleration compared to the previous eight months’ growth of 1.1 Tbps.
The company credits this rapid expansion to strong policy support from the Ministry of Posts and Telecommunications, proactive management efforts, and two rounds of strategic price reductions. Under the current government, BSCPLC’s total bandwidth delivery has grown by over 2.2 Tbps, a 105% increase within a year, reversing a prior period when over 65% of its capacity remained unused.
Additionally, the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission (BTRC) amended licensing rules mandating International Internet Gateway (IIG) operators to source at least 50% of their bandwidth from submarine cables, reducing reliance on Indian terrestrial routes and boosting domestic submarine cable usage. BSCPLC supports this by offering extra discounts to operators meeting this criterion and has launched specialised packages for data centres, cloud providers, and hyperscalers.
Looking ahead, the government has approved an agreement for the SEA-ME-WE 6 submarine cable under a revised route, expected to add 17 Tbps more to BSCPLC’s real-time bandwidth capacity, further strengthening Bangladesh’s internet infrastructure.
