Oman’s Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) has launched a cybersecurity awareness program to educate travelers about growing digital risks in aviation. Following recent attacks like the July 2025 Aeroflot breach, the program at Muscat and Salalah airports guides passengers on protecting personal data and safe digital practices.
The aviation sector’s digital transformation has enhanced operations but also increased cyber threats. The mid-2025 Aeroflot cyberattack, caused by pro-Ukraine hackers, disrupted flights and exposed vulnerabilities. To combat this, Oman’s CAA is promoting cybersecurity awareness among travelers and staff.
Under the motto “A Safe Journey in a Digital Space,” CAA’s program offers practical advice on avoiding phishing scams, unsecured Wi-Fi, malicious apps, and identity theft. Information desks at airports provide guidance on using VPNs, two-factor authentication, strong passwords, and safe travel apps.
Aviation operations rely heavily on automated systems—from ticket booking to baggage handling—making cybersecurity critical to safety. Oman’s CAA collaborates with partners to secure airline infrastructure and protect travelers’ sensitive data, including passports and payment information.
Passengers are urged to avoid public Wi-Fi for sensitive transactions, recognize phishing attempts, use unique passwords, stay informed on cyber risks, and rely on trusted travel services. This initiative is part of Oman’s broader digital transformation, aiming to build a security-conscious culture and position the country as a trusted aviation hub.
