Google has unveiled a new initiative, “Build with AI”, in partnership with GOMYCODE, to equip 1,000 Nigerian developers with advanced Generative Artificial Intelligence (AI) skills. The 11-week programme aims to accelerate Nigeria’s role in the global AI economy by nurturing locally relevant and globally competitive solutions.
John Kimani, Google’s Head of Developer Ecosystem for Sub-Saharan Africa, said the initiative comes at a critical moment as industries across Africa turn to technology for solutions to pressing challenges. He noted that access to Google’s Gemini AI tools and a structured curriculum overseen by Google experts will bridge the gap between raw talent and specialised AI expertise.
“This collaboration is about more than training; it’s about empowering Nigeria’s developer community with the tools to build the future,” Kimani said, adding that the programme would drive innovation in fintech, healthtech, and agritech, positioning Nigerian developers at the forefront of Africa’s digital transformation.
Delivered through GOMYCODE’s hacker spaces, the programme combines in-person instruction with hands-on, mentored lab work, ensuring practical application of skills. It will conclude with a demo day, where top participants will showcase their AI-powered solutions to Google and industry leaders.
Babatunde Olaifa, Country Director of GOMYCODE Nigeria, stressed the importance of creating the right environment for innovation. “We are incredibly excited to see solutions emerge that are built by Nigerians, for Nigeria and the world,” he said.
Applications for the “Build with AI” programme are now open to developers across Nigeria.
