Kuala Lumpur – U Mobile has officially launched Ultra5G, its standalone 5G network, with an initial rollout at Berjaya Times Square (BTS) in Kuala Lumpur and Penang Bridge 1, both fully covered with 5G cell sites. The move makes U Mobile Malaysia’s second 5G operator after securing spectrum rights in November 2024.
At the launch event, U Mobile showcased Ultra5G’s high-performance capabilities with live 4K video streaming from a roller coaster, an immersive mixed-reality demo, and network slicing applications, demonstrating the low-latency and high-capacity features of its standalone 5G network.
Strategic Indoor Focus
U Mobile’s CTO Woon Ooi Yuen said the operator is prioritising indoor coverage at high-impact locations such as airports, hospitals, and convention centres, noting that indoor connectivity is critical for Malaysia’s 5G adoption. The company plans to equip 170 buildings within 12 months, scaling up to over 600 buildings within four years.
The operator has also partnered with EdgePoint Infrastructure and OCK Telco Infra to accelerate 5G in-building deployment, ensuring robust indoor coverage that supports enterprise and consumer use cases.
Nationwide Expansion Goals
U Mobile is targeting 80% 5G coverage of populated areas by the second half of 2026, ahead of its original schedule. Yuen emphasized that the company is “doubling down on indoor coverage to deliver the widest and deepest 5G experience in Malaysia.”
