Egypt’s NTRA to Disconnect Mobile Devices Making Unsolicited Promotional Calls

The National Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (NTRA) of Egypt has announced stricter measures to combat nuisance promotional calls, effective Sunday, 24 August 2025. Under the new regulations, mobile devices found to be making unsolicited calls in violation of existing rules will be disconnected.

The decision follows mounting complaints from citizens about repeated disturbances and privacy violations caused by unregistered promotional calls. The NTRA clarified that rules governing the use of mobile lines for commercial purposes require companies to register their numbers and activities with telecom operators. Since the system’s introduction last year, nearly one million subscribers have registered, enabling recipients to view the caller’s name and number before answering.

Despite this, some companies and individuals continue to operate outside the framework, placing unregistered promotional calls. The NTRA urged them to comply with the rules to avoid disconnection. In addition, legal action will be pursued against violators under Article 76 of Law No. 10 of 2003 on Communications Regulation and Article 25 of Law No. 175 of 2018 on Combating IT Crimes, which provide for imprisonment and fines.

To safeguard users further, the NTRA has expanded complaint channels. Citizens can report nuisance calls through telecom company call centres, the regulator’s hotline (155), its “My NTRA” mobile app, or its official website.
