Banglalink Installs First Solar Array at Data Center in Bangladesh

Banglalink, Bangladesh’s third-largest mobile network operator, has deployed an 80kW solar power system at its Gazipur data center, marking the first time a telco in the country has integrated solar at one of its facilities. The rooftop array spans 9,000 sq ft and will generate around 130MWh annually.

The company said the project will cut carbon emissions by about 60 tons per year and is part of a broader effort to integrate renewable energy across its operations. Huseyin Turker, Banglalink’s Chief Technology and Information Officer, described the initiative as a “national benchmark for sustainable innovation” with significant environmental impact.

Wholly owned by Veon and headquartered in Dubai, Banglalink has recently shifted focus toward expanding its 4G network after shutting down its 3G services in 2023. It also sold 2,000 telecom towers to Summit Towers in a $100 million deal.

The move aligns with a growing trend among regional telecom and data center operators adopting on-site renewable energy. Similar projects include Oman Data Park’s 1.4MW solar system and Batelco’s hybrid wind-solar mobile site in Bahrain.
