The Middle East’s business events industry is set for major expansion, with technology—particularly artificial intelligence—emerging as a central driver, according to Dr. Senthil Gopinath, CEO of the International Congress and Convention Association (ICCA). He spoke during the ICCA Middle East Summit 2025, hosted for the first time in Bahrain.
The summit convened global leaders from the meetings and events industry to explore how technology, sustainability, and infrastructure can power economic growth. Dr. Gopinath highlighted Bahrain’s strong facilities, noting that convention centres and hotels act as catalysts that elevate cities into international meeting destinations.
He underscored that AI will be integral to the sector’s evolution, not as a replacement for human insight but as a tool to enhance decision-making, efficiency, and participant experience. “By integrating AI as a partner, organisers can anticipate needs, deliver precision, and improve event quality,” he said.
Speakers also stressed the broader impact of conferences on society, from airlines and hotels to transport and local economies. Khalid Al Zadjali, ICCA Middle East Chapter Chair, praised Bahrain’s efforts to advance its exhibition sector and raise its global profile through events like the ICCA Summit.
Anju Gomes, ICCA’s Senior Regional Director for the Middle East, added that venues remain foundational, combining space, catering, audiovisual resources, and security to deliver global-standard events. She said the Middle East’s rapid progress has positioned it as a new global hub for conferences, attracting repeat visitors who witness constant innovation.
