The Nepal Telecommunication Authority (NTA) has issued a directive requiring all mobile and internet service providers to deactivate 26 unlisted social media platforms across the country.
According to the circular released today, the ban includes some of the world’s most widely used platforms such as Facebook, Facebook Messenger, Instagram, YouTube, WhatsApp, Twitter (X), LinkedIn, Snapchat, and WeChat, among others.
Both Nepal Telecom, the state-owned operator, and Ncell, the largest private mobile provider, have confirmed that access to these platforms has been blocked in compliance with the NTA order.
While the NTA has not yet provided further details on the rationale behind the sweeping action, the directive represents one of the most extensive restrictions on digital platforms in Nepal’s recent history. The move is expected to have significant implications for communication, business, and online engagement in the country.
