Jordan’s TRC Confirms Red Sea Cable Disruptions, Warns of Slower Internet Speeds

Jordan’s Telecommunications Regulatory Commission (TRC) has confirmed that disruptions to undersea internet cables in the Red Sea are affecting connectivity across the region. While Jordan has not experienced a nationwide outage, users may encounter slower speeds and higher latency when accessing international content.

International monitoring bodies verified the disruptions, which have impacted multiple countries in the Middle East and South Asia. The TRC said it is working with licensed operators to optimize routing, increase local exchange capacity, and use terrestrial and Mediterranean cable alternatives to minimize the impact on Jordanian users.

Repairs to submarine cables are often lengthy and complex, requiring specialized ships and favorable conditions. The TRC noted that restoration could take weeks.

Jordan’s internet resilience is supported by multiple international routes, including submarine cables landing in Aqaba that connect to Mediterranean networks, and terrestrial links through Saudi Arabia to the Gulf. Plans are underway to expand and diversify these connections further, strengthening Jordan’s role as a regional data hub between Europe and Asia.
