Baghdad – Asiacell has introduced Iraq’s first Voice over Wi-Fi (VoWiFi) service, allowing subscribers to make and receive calls using Wi-Fi networks in areas with weak cellular coverage. The service, launched on Monday, aims to address poor indoor signal quality and network congestion in Iraq’s rapidly expanding urban environments.
With Baghdad and other cities witnessing a surge in residential and commercial high-rises, VoWiFi provides an alternative communication channel in locations such as tall buildings, basements, and remote areas where traditional mobile signals struggle. It also helps offload traffic from Asiacell’s cellular network during peak congestion.
Chra Hussein, Chief Commercial Officer at Asiacell, said the service will be available automatically at no additional cost and requires no separate app download. “We developed this service to meet the needs of our users in different locations and to offer them clearer calls without any hassle,” Hussein noted.
The launch marks a significant step in improving network reliability and customer experience in Iraq, enhancing Asiacell’s role as a digital services leader in the country.
