Muscat – Oman has unveiled its first dedicated Artificial Intelligence Zone, a landmark initiative aimed at attracting global tech start-ups and positioning the country as a regional hub for AI and advanced technology innovation. The AI Zone Special Economic Zone, located in Al Seeb, Muscat Governorate, was formally announced at Comex 2025 as a joint project between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) and the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ).
The first phase of development will cover 100,000 m² and involve investment inflows of around RO 100 million. Local developer Afouq Investment & Development has been entrusted with building the infrastructure in partnership with Egypt’s Prime Group. The zone will provide an integrated environment for AI start-ups from Oman, the Middle East, and Africa, with facilities to foster innovation, attract foreign investment, and create specialized jobs.
Dr. Seema al Kaabi, Acting Director General at MoTCIT, said the project will strengthen Oman’s technology infrastructure, support start-up growth, and expand their reach regionally and globally. Afouq will handle operations, investor promotion, and local value creation, while also aligning the project with Oman’s social responsibility goals.
Afouq Chairperson Siham al Harthy emphasized that the AI Zone will combine world-class technology infrastructure with Omani cultural heritage to create a unique innovation hub. Prime Group CEO Mahmoud Farrag added that global partnerships are already being developed to ensure the hub leverages international expertise, positioning Oman as a platform for future-ready investment and innovation.
