Sri Lanka’s LOLC Advanced Technologies (LOLC AT), a subsidiary of LOLC Holdings PLC, has announced a landmark partnership with Amsterdam-based Corsair Group International to expand and upgrade its waste-to-fuel facility in Kerawalapitiya. The initiative addresses the country’s escalating plastic and polythene waste crisis, with Sri Lanka generating an estimated 7,000 metric tons of solid waste daily, much of which ends up in landfills and oceans.
LOLC AT first commissioned its waste-to-fuel plant in 2023, successfully converting non-recyclable plastics into reusable fuel throughout 2024. The partnership with Corsair will enhance this foundation using proprietary technology to produce ISCC PLUS-certified pyrolysis oil — a sustainable raw material for petrochemical companies to create new plastics. This approach supports the transition to a circular economy where waste is transformed into valuable resources.
The expanded facility will be capable of processing 12 million kilograms of plastic waste annually, handling a wider range of materials and delivering higher-quality pyrolysis oil. Beyond reducing pollution, the project is expected to create green jobs, stimulate innovation, and establish Sri Lanka as a regional leader in sustainable waste management solutions.
Construction of the upgraded facility will begin in 2025 and is expected to be completed within two years. Under the agreement, Corsair will bring technical expertise and global experience in plastic waste recycling, while LOLC AT will contribute operational know-how and local project management.
Danesh Abeyrathna, Director/CEO of LOLC AT, called the project “a significant milestone” in tackling Sri Lanka’s environmental challenges. Jussi Saloranta, CEO of Corsair Group International, highlighted the partnership as the first of several joint initiatives aimed at driving meaningful impact in Sri Lanka’s sustainable development journey.
