Oman has announced its first-ever AI Zone Special Economic Zone, a landmark initiative that will serve as a regional and global hub for artificial intelligence and advanced technology start-ups. The project, launched at COMEX 2025, is a joint effort between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology (MoTCIT) and the Public Authority for Special Economic Zones and Free Zones (OPAZ).
Located in Al Seeb, Muscat Governorate, the first phase of the AI Zone will cover 100,000 m², with development led by Afouq Investment & Development in partnership with Egypt’s Prime Group. The two partners have pledged investments of around RO 100 million for this initial phase, incorporating world-class technologies and future-ready solutions.
Dr Seema al Kaabi, Acting Director General at MoTCIT, highlighted the project’s importance in attracting regional and global start-ups, creating high-quality jobs, and advancing Oman’s digital infrastructure. “This initiative will position Oman as a preferred destination for AI innovation while strengthening the national economy and supporting global expansion of start-ups,” she noted.
Afouq will oversee infrastructure development, operations, and promotion of the zone, while also driving local value creation and community-focused programs. Chairperson Siham al Harthy emphasized that the zone will be both an architectural landmark and a launchpad for innovation, blending global tech hub standards with Omani cultural heritage.
Prime Group CEO Mahmoud Farrag confirmed that international partnerships are already underway to bring expertise from across Asia, Africa, and the Middle East, leveraging a network of corporations, research institutions, and accelerators. “Developing a dedicated AI hub requires collaboration with globally recognized players, and we are committed to positioning Oman as a global platform for future investment and innovation,” he said.
With this initiative, Oman is taking a bold step toward localizing advanced technologies and cementing its role as a key player in the global digital economy, aligned with the ambitions of Oman Vision 2040.
