Colombo, November 3, 2025 — The Telecommunications Regulatory Commission of Sri Lanka (TRCSL) has conducted the second Progress Presentations of its Research and Development (R&D) Program, spotlighting innovative collaborations between academia and industry designed to accelerate technological advancement in the nation’s telecommunications sector.
Established under the Sri Lanka Telecommunications Act No. 25 of 1991, TRCSL’s R&D Program serves as a vital bridge linking universities, industry partners, and the regulator, fostering applied research that supports the sustainable growth of Sri Lanka’s digital ecosystem.
The 2025 session featured pioneering projects from the University of Moratuwa, University of Kelaniya, and University of Ruhuna, addressing diverse challenges such as spatial sound recording for speech enhancement, IoT-enabled sleep monitoring for independent living, machine learning-driven network optimization to mitigate LTE-TDD interference, and software innovations to empower visually impaired schoolchildren.
Led by Director-General Air Vice Marshal (Retd.) Bandula Herath, the event convened researchers, faculty members, industry representatives, and TRCSL committee members for interactive sessions that encouraged dialogue, feedback, and collaboration — ensuring academic innovation aligns with national telecom priorities and industry needs.
