Orange Tunisia welcomes Medusa subsea cable in Bizerte

Bizerte, Tunisia – November 3, 2025: Orange Tunisia and the Medusa Submarine Cable System have announced the successful landing of the Medusa submarine cable in Bizerte, marking Tunisia as the first African nation to host this strategic Mediterranean network.

Stretching over 8,000 kilometers, Medusa is now the largest submarine fiber optic cable system in the Mediterranean, linking 13 countries across North Africa, Southern Europe, and the Middle East. The Tunisian section spans 1,040 kilometers and connects directly to Marseille, France, where the system made its initial landing in early October.

Orange Tunisia will own and operate the Bizerte landing station and manage associated infrastructure, gaining access to a maximum capacity of 24 Tbps.

“We are particularly proud to welcome Medusa, a strategic infrastructure that consolidates Tunisia’s position as a digital hub in the Mediterranean,” said Stéphane Varret, CEO of Orange Tunisia. “This project illustrates our commitment to sustainably connecting territories and accelerating the country’s digital transformation.”

Supported by the European Union’s Global Gateway Initiative, the project symbolizes a deepening of Euro-African digital cooperation.

Giuseppe Perrone, EU Ambassador to Tunisia, remarked, “Medusa represents a modern Euro-African partnership founded on connectivity, innovation, and sustainable development.”

Norman Albi, CEO of Medusa Submarine Cable System, added:

“This landing embodies a shared vision for a more connected and competitive Mediterranean. Together with Orange Tunisia, we are building infrastructure essential to regional economic growth and technological advancement for decades to come.”

The Medusa project reinforces Tunisia’s role as a key digital bridge between Africa and Europe, unlocking new potential for connectivity, innovation, and regional trade.
