UNESCO releases global report on Bahrain’s AI readiness

UNESCO has released its global AI Readiness Assessment Report for Bahrain, praising the Kingdom’s strong progress and growing capacity in adopting artificial intelligence responsibly and effectively. Bahrain is now the second GCC nation to be evaluated under UNESCO’s Readiness Assessment Methodology (RAM), a world-class framework that measures a country’s preparedness for AI across national governance, regulation, culture, education, economic conditions, and technological infrastructure.

The report was officially launched during a joint meeting between the Information & eGovernment Authority (iGA) and UNESCO representatives, attended by senior national officials and contributors from both the public and private sectors. iGA Chief Executive Mohammed Ali Al Qaed said the assessment reflects Bahrain’s commitment to advancing digital competitiveness and aligning with national directives to expand the safe, ethical, and strategic use of AI across government and society.

UNESCO commended Bahrain’s strong institutional foundations, highlighting its leadership in digital governance, evidenced by its 18th place global ranking in the 2024 UN E-Government Development Index. The report also recognised the Kingdom’s inclusive approach to digital transformation, noting that 42% of STEM students in Bahrain are women—a key indicator of sustainable and equitable innovation.

The assessment highlights major national initiatives such as the iGA’s Innovation and Advanced Technology Directorate, the GCC AI Ethics Guiding Manual (2023), Bahrain’s National AI Policy (2025), and supporting programmes like the Innovation Hub and AI Talent Programme.

Alongside praise, the report outlines strategic recommendations to strengthen Bahrain’s capabilities in ethical AI, encourage research on the social and economic impacts of emerging technologies, and accelerate progress toward a digitally empowered, innovation-driven economy aligned with Bahrain Vision 2030.

UNESCO officials emphasised that Bahrain’s continued commitment to responsible AI will reinforce its position as a regional leader in digital transformation, while supporting global goals related to education, equality, innovation, and strong institutions.
