Airtel Nigeria and itel Launch 4G Smartphone Financing to Accelerate Digital Inclusion

Airtel Nigeria has introduced a new Smartphone Financing Programme designed to help millions of existing customers upgrade from 2G and 3G devices to 4G smartphones at affordable installment plans. The initiative, launched in partnership with itel, aims to remove financial barriers and expand access to high-speed connectivity nationwide. The programme will begin with the itel A50 smartphone, offered through Airtel’s exclusive retail network.

Eligible Airtel users can check their financing status via *492# and complete onboarding at an Airtel-owned shop. Upon a down payment of ₦19,000 or ₦21,000, customers receive their smartphone immediately along with seamless access to 4G internet services. Payments, including installments, will be made securely through SmartCash — Airtel’s mobile money platform.

CEO Dinesh Balsingh said the move reflects Airtel’s commitment to empowering Nigerians through digital access, noting that smartphones are essential for education, productivity, and economic participation. Airtel aims to bridge the digital divide while supporting a more connected future. Director of Marketing Ismail Adeshina added that integrated technology and partnerships make the financing model sustainable, fostering inclusive growth.

To qualify, customers must have used the Airtel network for at least three months, hold a SmartCash account, provide valid ID, and consent to eligibility checks processed by Intelligra.
