Meta and a consortium of global and regional telecom leaders have officially completed and activated the 2Africa Subsea Cable system — the world’s longest open-access subsea cable infrastructure. Spanning three continents and 33 countries, this landmark system connects East and West Africa in one continuous loop, linking the continent to the Middle East, South Asia, and Europe, and ultimately reaching over three billion people.
Designed by Meta alongside Bayobab (MTN Group), Orange, center3, Telecom Egypt, Vodafone Group, and WIOCC, 2Africa brings more data capacity than all existing African subsea cables combined. It promises faster, more reliable, and more affordable internet access, laying the groundwork for next-generation digital services, AI-driven innovation, and inclusive economic growth.
The system is expected to transform connectivity for Africa’s 1.4 billion people and significantly boost enterprise, cloud, and digital commerce opportunities across the region. At the launch, Meta reiterated its commitment to long-term investment in Africa’s digital infrastructure, calling the project a model of what visionary collaboration can achieve.
With 2Africa now complete, millions will benefit from stronger internet performance, improved network resilience, and expanded access to digital tools — strengthening Africa’s position in the global digital economy.
