AI-Powered Smart Metre Project Launched to Boost Sustainable Agriculture in Abu Dhabi

ABU DHABI: The Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, in partnership with the Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority, has launched the AI-powered Smart Metre Project in the Al Wathba area, marking a major step toward smarter water management and sustainable agriculture across the emirate.

The initiative integrates artificial intelligence and digital monitoring technologies to improve water-use efficiency, ensure fair distribution, and support data-driven decision-making for farmers. AI-enabled smart metres are being connected to the Department of Energy’s AD.WE digital platform, allowing accurate, real-time monitoring of agricultural water consumption and helping reduce water loss and inefficient use.

Following a successful pilot phase, the project currently covers 80 farms in Al Wathba, with expansion plans already in place for Al Nahda, which will include 130 farms, and Al Rahba, where the rollout will extend to around 2,500 farms. The broader deployment is expected to strengthen agricultural productivity while safeguarding critical water resources.

Ahmed Mohammed Al Rumaithi, Undersecretary of the Abu Dhabi Department of Energy, said the project demonstrates how innovation and collaboration can transform resource management, reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s commitment to food and water security. ADAFSA Acting Director-General Dr. Tariq Ahmed Al Ameri added that the initiative represents a pivotal move toward a smart agriculture ecosystem by giving farmers accurate, real-time insights to improve efficiency and sustainability.
