5G Officially Launched in Algeria, Marking Major Step in Digital Transformation

Algeria has officially launched 5G mobile technology, marking a new phase in the country’s telecommunications and digital development. The announcement was made by Minister of Post and Telecommunications Sid Ali Zerrouki during a formal ceremony in Algiers attended by government officials, regulators, and the country’s three licensed mobile operators—Mobilis, Ooredoo, and Djezzy.

The launch event, held at the Abdelatif-Rahal International Conference Center, signaled the start of a gradual nationwide rollout designed to strengthen Algeria’s digital economy. According to Zerrouki, 5G represents a decisive milestone in modernizing the national telecom infrastructure and supports strategic priorities such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, cloud computing, Industry 4.0, smart mobility, healthcare, and education.

The minister highlighted the expected economic impact of the digital ecosystem, estimating a contribution of $9 billion to GDP in 2025, rising to $13 billion by 2030, driven by job creation, added value, and increased investor interest. He attributed the successful launch to strong political backing and oversight from President Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Executives from all three operators reaffirmed their readiness to deploy 5G services. Mobilis cited successful speed tests reaching 1.2 Gbps, while Ooredoo and Djezzy emphasized their commitment to innovation, infrastructure development, and inclusive digital access for citizens and businesses.

The launch follows months of technical testing supervised by the Regulatory Authority of Post and Electronic Communications, with licenses awarded in July and confirmed in November. Initial deployment will begin in eight pilot provinces under a national plan aimed at balanced and progressive coverage over six years
