Nigeria’s telecommunications sector continued its steady expansion in the third quarter of 2025, with active mobile subscriptions rising to 175.3 million in October, according to the latest data released by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC). Teledensity increased to 80.87 percent, reflecting broader access to mobile services nationwide.
The data shows consistent month-on-month growth. Active subscriptions stood at 171.6 million in August, rising to 173.5 million in September before reaching 175.3 million in October. Teledensity followed a similar trajectory, climbing from 79.14 percent in August to 80.05 percent in September.
Broadband penetration also recorded gradual improvement, reaching 49.89 percent in October, up from 49.34 percent in September and 48.81 percent in August. Industry analysts attributed the growth to sustained demand for mobile voice and data services, alongside incremental upgrades in network coverage and capacity, despite ongoing challenges such as high operating costs, infrastructure gaps, and unreliable power supply.
Operator data for October shows MTN Nigeria maintaining market leadership with 91.1 million active lines, representing a 52.02 percent market share. Airtel Nigeria followed with 59.0 million subscribers and a 33.72 percent share, while Globacom recorded 21.8 million subscriptions, accounting for 12.47 percent. 9mobile (T2) trailed with 3.1 million active lines and a 1.79 percent share.
Stakeholders noted that while rising teledensity signals wider access to telecom services, there remains a need for faster broadband rollout, improved quality of service, and deeper penetration in rural and underserved communities. Analysts added that the sector’s continued growth highlights its central role in driving digital inclusion, economic activity, and nationwide connectivity.
