Bahrain’s TRA Authorises Satellite Direct-to-Device Services

Bahrain’s Telecommunications Regulatory Authority (TRA) has authorised the use of satellite direct-to-device (D2D) services, marking a significant regulatory milestone in the Kingdom’s connectivity landscape. The move follows the completion and publication of a public consultation report and forms a key part of the TRA’s strategy to position Bahrain as a global leader in digital innovation and advanced communications.

With this decision, Bahrain becomes the first country in the region to approve the use of technology that allows standard mobile phones to connect directly to satellites in areas beyond the reach of terrestrial networks. Satellite D2D services are expected to play an important role in extending connectivity to remote locations, including maritime zones, improving emergency communications, and ensuring service continuity during network outages.

The authorisation does not mean that satellite D2D services will be immediately available to consumers. Further steps are required, including the awarding of licences and the establishment of partnerships with local telecom operators. Phased rollouts and pilot deployments are also expected, allowing regulators to assess interoperability, safety, and service reliability before wider commercial launches are approved.

The TRA said the initiative aligns with its broader efforts to enhance nationwide connectivity, support emerging technologies, and ensure Bahrain’s telecommunications framework remains future-ready and aligned with international best practices.
