Algeria Launches Skikda Landing Station for Medusa Submarine Cable

Algeria has launched construction of a new landing station for the Medusa submarine fiber optic cable in Collo, within the wilaya of Skikda, reinforcing the country’s position in Mediterranean digital infrastructure. The foundation stone was laid by the Minister of Posts and Telecommunications, Sid Ali Zerrouki, during an official site visit.

The Medusa project is a strategic component of Algeria’s national telecommunications modernization agenda, aimed at boosting high-capacity international connectivity. Construction began in October from the port of Algiers and is considered one of the most ambitious digital connectivity initiatives in the Mediterranean region.

Spanning more than 8,700 kilometers, the Medusa cable will connect over ten Mediterranean countries and deliver transmission capacity of up to 20 terabits per second. Algeria will host two landing points, in Algiers and Collo, with direct links to multiple stations in Southern Europe, enhancing route diversity and network resilience.

According to the ministry, the infrastructure will support growing demand for ultra-high-speed connectivity, particularly for 5G deployment and cloud computing services. The project is also expected to strengthen communications security and reduce service disruption risks through diversified submarine routes. The eastern segment is scheduled to enter service by the end of 2026, with full system operation planned for early 2027.
