Pakistan telecom regulator warns users against misuse of SIM cards

ISLAMABAD: Pakistan’s telecommunications regulator has warned mobile phone users to ensure their SIM cards are registered in their own names and used responsibly, stressing that registered owners will be held accountable for any misuse.

In a statement issued on Thursday, the Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) said the use of SIM cards registered under another individual’s name violates telecom regulations and may lead to enforcement action. The advisory reinforces the regulator’s efforts to strengthen accountability and security across the country’s telecommunications network.

“All SIMs must be registered in the user’s own name,” the PTA said, adding that any misuse of a SIM will be the sole responsibility of the registered owner. The authority clarified that individuals will be accountable for all calls, messages, and data usage carried out through their SIMs or associated devices.

The PTA noted that SIM registration in the user’s own name is an internationally adopted practice aimed at enhancing telecom security and ensuring traceability and accountability within digital communication systems.

The warning comes amid recent complaints from business communities in Karachi, Pakistan’s commercial hub, about receiving threatening calls allegedly linked to extortion attempts. Local business groups have raised concerns over the misuse of mobile connections for criminal activities.

The regulator urged consumers to adopt responsible usage practices and contribute actively to maintaining the security, stability, and reliability of Pakistan’s telecommunications infrastructure.
