MCIT and Orange plan to boost telemedicine in Egypt

Egypt’s Ministry of Communications and Information Technology (MCIT) and Orange Egypt have signed a memorandum of understanding to expand telemedicine services and deliver integrated, high-quality digital healthcare to villages and remote and underserved areas across the country.

The agreement will be implemented in collaboration with civil society organisations and specialised medical convoys operating in multiple governorates. It falls under the Digital Transformation for Sustainable Development in Egypt (DT4SDE) project, led by MCIT’s Central Department of Digital Community Development in cooperation with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP).

The initiative focuses on ensuring equitable and sustainable access to advanced digital healthcare services by expanding telemedicine solutions through comprehensive, digitally automated, and scalable health interventions, particularly in deprived and hard-to-reach areas.

As part of the project, an integrated digital health system will be established to connect local healthcare units with university and central hospitals. Medical personnel will receive training and access to smart digital solutions to improve service efficiency and enhance the quality of care provided to citizens.

Implementation will include the deployment of mobile telemedicine units within medical convoys operated by civil society organisations. These units will provide medical examinations, initial screenings, treatment services, and health awareness campaigns, targeting priority population groups.

The mechanism is also designed to increase medical consultations, enable the exchange of expertise, and interconnect specialised health facilities through telemedicine technologies. It aims to support faster referrals for critical cases, improve diagnostic accuracy, and reduce pressure on hospitals.

The MoU will run for two years. During this period, MCIT will oversee the preparation of digital medical units, technical and operational monitoring, awareness activities, and capacity-building efforts in coordination with civil society partners.

Orange Egypt will fully fund the initiative through its corporate social responsibility programmes, including equipping telemedicine units and implementing training and awareness programmes, in line with transparency and governance standards.
