El-Sisi directs to expand local manufacturing of telecommunications devices

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi has directed authorities to explore the development of data centres and cloud computing services, while accelerating the local manufacturing of telecommunications devices as part of Egypt’s broader digital and industrial strategy.

The directive was issued during a meeting with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouly and Minister of Communications and Information Technology Amr Talaat, where the president stressed the need for effective mechanisms to support and incentivise domestically manufactured telecom products. He highlighted the importance of unlocking new growth opportunities for the sector while addressing structural challenges facing local production.

President El-Sisi also reviewed Egypt’s strategic roadmap for advancing the telecommunications industry and strengthening the transition toward a knowledge-based economy. Minister Talaat briefed the president on recently launched services, including 5G mobile services, WiFi Calling, and the establishment of the National Spectrum Usage Monitoring Center.

The meeting further covered plans to expand and modernise mobile networks nationwide to ensure reliable, high-quality internet and mobile services across cities, villages, and underserved areas.

Minister Talaat noted that telecommunications has become one of Egypt’s most critical service sectors, recording the highest growth rates in the economy for the seventh consecutive year, ranging between 14% and 16%. He added that the sector’s contribution to GDP has risen to around 6%, underscoring its role in supporting economic growth and sustainable development.

Progress on key digital infrastructure projects was also reviewed, including the ongoing replacement of copper networks with fibre-optic infrastructure under a national modernisation plan, alongside continued expansion of mobile towers to enhance service quality across the country.
