Eutelsat OneWeb brings connectivity to passenger trains in Gabon

Eutelsat has launched OneWeb low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite connectivity services on passenger trains in Gabon through a partnership with Airtel Gabon, marking a milestone in the country’s transport modernisation efforts. The rollout follows successful trials and is part of a national programme led by the Gabonese Ministry of Digital Economy, Digitalisation and Innovation, alongside the Ministry of Transport and the Transgabon Railway Operating Company (SETRAG).

By extending LEO-based broadband to rail services, the initiative enables reliable internet access on long-distance routes beyond the reach of terrestrial networks, improving passenger comfort and integrating digital services into public transport. The deployment also strengthens Eutelsat’s OneWeb footprint in Africa and reinforces collaboration with governments and telecom operators to enhance digital infrastructure.

Eutelsat said the project supports national digital initiatives and creates a foundation for future rail connectivity deployments across Africa. Airtel Gabon highlighted the role of the partnership in advancing innovation and digital transformation within the country’s rail network.
