Nepal Telecom warns VAS providers over circulation of offensive SMS

Nepal Telecom has issued a formal warning to Value Added Services (VAS) providers after offensive and inappropriate messages were found circulating to mobile users through its network.

The state-owned operator said it has directed all service providers to refrain from sending content that could harm ethnic, class-based, religious, communal, or political harmony. Any future violations will invite strict regulatory action, the company warned.

Reiterating its stance on user privacy, Nepal Telecom stressed that it does not share subscribers’ personal mobile numbers or data with third parties and remains highly sensitive to the protection of customer information.

The move follows rising public concern over the misuse of bulk messaging and VAS platforms to distribute controversial or disruptive content, prompting the operator to tighten oversight and reinforce content standards across its ecosystem.
