The Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC) and the Nigeria Data Protection Commission (NDPC) have signed a Memorandum of Understanding aimed at strengthening the protection and privacy of citizens’ data within the telecommunications sector, as digital services continue to expand across the country.
The agreement establishes a structured framework for collaboration between the telecom regulator and the national data protection authority, aligning their mandates to improve regulatory clarity, reduce overlap, and enhance oversight of how personal data is managed within the communications industry.
Officials from both organisations highlighted the growing importance of data governance, security and consumer privacy in an increasingly digital economy. The telecommunications sector, one of Nigeria’s largest contributors to GDP, was identified as a critical area for cooperation due to the scale of data generated through mobile and digital services.
The MoU is intended to strengthen consumer protection, promote regulatory efficiency, and ensure that personal information is handled responsibly by industry stakeholders. Both agencies emphasised that improved awareness of data rights among citizens is essential as data becomes an increasingly valuable economic asset.
The collaboration is also expected to support Nigeria’s broader digital economy ambitions by establishing clearer governance structures around data usage, reinforcing trust in telecom services and preparing the sector for future challenges related to data monetisation and digital sovereignty.
