Egypt’s Health Ministry launches specialized clinics to treat internet, video game addiction

Egypt’s Ministry of Health and Population has launched specialized clinics focused on treating internet and video game misuse and addiction as part of its national mental health initiative, Sahtak Sa’ada (“Your Health is Your Happiness”).

The first phase introduces clinics across six major mental health hospitals in Cairo, Qalyubia, Alexandria, Dakahlia, Minya and Assiut, offering services to all age groups. The program includes early diagnosis through psychiatric evaluations, digital assessment tools such as the Internet Addiction Questionnaire, and structured guidance on safe screen time tailored to different age groups.

According to health officials, 120 medical staff members have completed specialized training to ensure treatment aligns with international mental health standards. The initiative aims to address psychological challenges linked to excessive digital usage while promoting awareness and preventive care through Egypt’s National Platform for Mental Health.

The ministry described the initiative as part of broader efforts to strengthen mental well-being, support human development and help families manage the growing impact of digital technology on daily life.
