PTA Makes Core Bands Mandatory to Ensure Solid 5G Rollout in Pakistan

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) has made participation in the 2600 MHz and 3500 MHz spectrum bands mandatory for telecom operators in the upcoming 5G auction, aiming to ensure a meaningful and timely rollout of next-generation services.

According to officials, the move is designed to prevent fragmented deployment and ensure that 5G services in Pakistan deliver tangible performance improvements rather than remaining limited to trials or partial coverage.

Under the auction framework, the 2600 MHz band will be usable for both 4G and 5G services, while the 3500 MHz band has been designated exclusively for 5G deployment. Although operators may bid on other available bands in line with their commercial strategies, participation in these two core bands will be compulsory.

Regulators noted that while some countries introduced 5G without mandating specific spectrum participation, PTA has opted for a stricter structure to accelerate the development of a functional 5G ecosystem soon after spectrum allocation.

Ahead of the main auction, PTA will conduct a mock auction to test the bidding software and familiarise operators with the auction process. Bidding manuals will be shared in advance, and the mock exercise will allow companies to understand both technical and procedural requirements before actual bidding begins.

PTA confirmed that all six spectrum bands will be available on auction day. The bidding process may conclude within a single day or extend over two to three days, depending on operator interest and competition across multiple bands.

February 27 has been set as the deadline for submission of bid documents. Each participating operator will be required to submit a bank guarantee of USD 15 million. PTA will also confirm the final list of participating companies on the same date.
